I’m Guy, a Junior Game Designer who likes to wear a lot of hats.
I love communication, especially visual, and it shows in the work I’ve produced throughout my years of study, professional work and innumerable personal projects.
I graduated in 2024 with Distinction in both my B of Design and B of Media, and now work as a Junior Game Designer in Sydney.
Most of all, I’m overjoyed at the opportunity to keep designing what matters most to me.
I'm currently working in a professional setting on Playconomics as a Junior Game Designer.
Playconomics offers students an opportunity to inhabit a vast, persistent world -- and earn credits for university-level courses while they play.
I made Soulful for the first time over the course of a year to learn JavaScript in 2021.
The second remake I presented at my booth for SXSW Sydney 2023.
As of 2024 I'm working on the third remake, this time written in C# for Unity.
It’s my love letter to the rougelike genre of video games – it’s equal parts exploration, fighting, looting and building. I’m proud of its design because you can do all four parts, or just focus on one if you want to.
When I got my friends to play it, one of them beat it in 10 minutes, skipping past all the tricky enemies straight to the final boss. Another spent that time clearing out the entire board, to write a message in tree trunks.
The world is totally interactive, and it’s up to you.
Homespun is a theme for Reddit I made.
I released it in 2016 for free, and it's currently being used in communities with over a million and a half subscribers.
It’s no secret that the design of Old Reddit was lacking: it had remained almost unchanged in aesthetic since its inception in 2005. I wasn’t alone in my desire to give Reddit a fresh coat of paint, and when I released Homespun it joined the ranks of many other free alternatives.
Despite this, Homespun is currently the most upvoted post on the themes subreddit. I attribute this to my graphical choices, which were heavily inspired by Google’s Material Design guidelines and placed heavy emphasis on usability and simplicity.
In 2022 I was given the opportunity to design the cover for Tharunka's 70th anniversary issue.
Tharunka is UNSW's student newspaper, and I'm overjoyed to have contributed to its legacy. I was also asked to design several spreads in the issue. The process was long: it involved brainstorming, collaboration, creation and (much) refinement.
The journey was equal parts and fun, challenging and educational for me. I'm very pleased with the end result. Much of my work used old photographs from UNSW's archives and worked well with the issue's overall "messy" motif.
What's interesting about Gridaro is that it started from a mechanic, rather than an idea.
This was a fascinating personal project for me, as I was used to designing from top-down, rather than bottom-up.
Broadcast is the codename for a Javascript-based video game currently in development as a personal project.
It's a captivating experience to develop and design, as it's entirely rendered with vanilla Javascript, and featured a pseudo-3d space to move around in.
Kindsuco was a fun experiment with UX -- there are 9 different types of enemies, each separated by colour and shape.
I found that the highscore counter thrilled my peers, and the visual effects elevated the experience in a significant way I wasn't expecting.
